Anyone who runs a small or medium-sized business in the UK soon realises that there are 101 things to know about and just not enough hours in the day (even if you have the inclination) to acquire the knowledge. Nor are there usually sufficient funds in the bank account to put the necessary expertise on the payroll.
Of course many small business owners simply ignore their areas of weakness, in the (often misplaced) hope that it won't ever cause them trouble. If and when it does, of course, the trouble is usually double or treble.
The Enlightened Alternative
For the enlightened ones (like you, potentially, or you wouldn't be here in the first place), the trouble is, buying expert help is a lot like buying an expensive pig in a poke. There are numerous organisations you can go to some government-funded, like Business Link-others, umbrella groups of independent advisors with proven experience in business. Or you can accept one of the many cold calls you undoubtedly receive, offering you such advice.
Your problem is that you have no idea whether the person who arrives in your office really knows what he or she is talking about, whether they have any direct knowledge of your particular market place, whether they will have the expertise for the specific problems you wish to address, and finally (and most importantly) whether you will get on with them on a personal basis.

Register Of Experts
Here at IBA, we keep a register of "experts in their field", catalogued by areas of personal expertise and business sector experience, geography (you want someone who can pop in at a moment's notice, ideally), and their character/management style. They are all known personally to us and we can vouchsafe their high level of business knowledge.
